Player Notes

  • Juuse Saros likely starter for Tuesday night
Juuse Saros is likely to start against Tampa Bay on Tuesday night.

Advice: Saros was the first goaltender off the ice at the morning skate. He blanked the Golden Knights in his last outing on Jan. 16. Saros has 5-3-3 record with a 2.23 goals-against average, a .930 save percentage and three shutouts in 12 appearances. 23 minutes ago
  • Bryan Rust will be a game-time decision
Bryan Rust (upper body) will be a game-time decision Tuesday night.

Advice: For what it's worth, Rust said he felt good after taking part in the team's optional skate in the morning. He has missed the last 11 games with an upper-body injury. Today, 8:32 am
    Injured Reserve
  • DiDomenico earns an assist Monday night
Christopher DiDomenico posted an assist in a 3-1 loss to Minnesota on Monday night.

Advice: DiDomenico got into the lineup following a promotion from the minors because of an injury to Mark Stone. He has provided seven points in 14 games with Ottawa this season. Today, 7:58 am
  • Andrew Shaw (lower body) won't play this week
Andrew Shaw (lower body) will not return until after the All-Star break.

Advice: Shaw has already missed four games due to a lower-body injury and he'll miss two more contests this week before All-Star weekend. Today, 7:51 am
    Injured Reserve
  • Daniel Carr could be scratched again
Daniel Carr is projected to be a healthy scratch again Tuesday based on Monday's practice lines.

Advice: Carr has been in the press box for the last two games and five of the last seven even though he has been productive at the NHL level this year. He has contributed three goals and seven assists in 16 games, while seeing fourth-line minutes. However, Carr hasn't picked up a point in his last seven outings. Today, 7:47 am
  • Pens taking it a day at a time with Murray
The Penguins are taking things one day at a time with Matt Murray (personal).

Advice: Murray rejoined the Penguins and practiced on Monday for the first time since his father's sudden death. Afterwards, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said that Murray's status for Tuesday's game hadn't been decided yet. If Murray feels up to playing then he might, but if he needs more time, that's understandable too. Murray expressed appreciation to the organization and his teammates and he was happy to start practicing again. "For sure, yeah, it felt really good [Monday] just to get out there," Murray said. "It means a lot to me." Today, 7:37 am
  • Andreas Athanasiou records two assists Monday
Andreas Athanasiou earned two assists in Monday's 3-0 win over New Jersey.

Advice: Athanasiou had a hand in goals by Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi in the contest. He has picked up two points in a game five times in his last eight matches. Athanasiou has four goals and six helpers during that span. Today, 7:14 am
  • Bailey already approaching career-high in PTS
Josh Bailey is on a three-game point streak.

Advice: Bailey has recorded four assists over that span. He's up to 12 goals and 54 points in 45 contests in 2017-18. That puts him just two points away from his career-high and we're only in January. Today, 7:11 am
  • Josh Gorges out with an illness Monday
Josh Gorges was unavailable to play Monday because of an illness.

Advice: Gorges has two assists, 43 hits and 37 blocks in 22 appearances this season. If he isn't ready to play Tuesday and Nathan Beaulieu remains out then Victor Antipin may get to make his long-awaited return to the lineup. Today, 7:02 am
  • Edmonton might trade Patrick Maroon
The Edmonton Oilers might trade Patrick Maroon before the deadline.

Advice: Maroon is in the final season of his three-year, $6 million contract, so he can become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Going into the campaign, the odds of the Oilers trade Maroon were believed to be slim as the club had anticipated being in the playoffs race. However, Edmonton's struggles this season has made it far more likely that the Oilers will be sellers at the deadline. Maroon is likely to spark interest given that he plays a physical game and chips in offensively. So far in 2017-18, he has 13 goals and 26 points in 45 contests. For his part though, Maroon is hoping that he stays with Edmonton. Today, 6:55 am
  • Scott Darling has been a big disappointment
We're in January and Scott Darling has done nothing to inspire confidence in the Hurricanes' decision to give him a chance at being a starer.

Advice: Instead, whether or not Darling should even be considered the Hurricanes' starter anymore is debatable. He has a 9-13-6 record with a 3.02 GAA and .892 save percentage in 29 contests, which has created an opening for Cam Ward to once again step up. The Hurricanes acquired Darling in the hopes of transitioning away from Ward and they showed their confidence in Darling by giving him a four-year, $16.6 million contract back in May. At the time, it seemed like a reasonable gamble as Darling has done a great job in the backup role with Chicago, but now that contract looks like a burden for the Hurricanes going forward. Today, 6:50 am
  • Johnny Gaudreau reaches the 40 assist mark
Johnny Gaudreau recorded his 40th assist of 2017-18 on Monday.

Advice: Gaudreau has now reached the 40-assist milestone in each of his first four campaigns, excluding 2013-14 when he only played in a single contest. He's never gotten more than 48 assists in a single season though and given that we're still in January, there's a good chance that he's going to end up setting a new personal best. Meanwhile, he's tied for fourth in the league's scoring race with 55 points in 47 games. Today, 6:44 am
  • Kevan Miller set to draw back in Tuesday
Kevan Miller should be back in the lineup on Tuesday night.

Advice: Miller was healthy enough to play this past Saturday after missing two games because of an illness. It's likely he will be paired with Matt Grzelcyk, as rookie defender Charlie McAvoy is out after he had a minor heart procedure. Today, 6:43 am
  • O. Ekman-Larsson picks up an assist Monday
Oliver Ekman-Larsson recorded an assist in Arizona's 3-2 overtime win against the Islanders Monday night.

Advice: Ekman-Larsson has now gotten a point in four of his last five games. He's up to eight goals and 23 points in 49 contests this season. Today, 6:40 am
  • Luke Schenn gets an assist on Monday
Luke Schenn registered an assist in Arizona's 3-2 overtime win against the New York Islanders Monday night.

Advice: Schenn has five assists in 47 contests this season. He's about as pure of a defensive defenseman as you get with his contributions becoming more apparent if you look at other statistics. Most notably, he has 147 hits and 73 blocked shots in 2017-18. Today, 6:38 am
  • Corey Perry practices on the fourth line
Corey Perry skated on the fourth line during Monday's practice.

Advice: It's probably not a permanent move, but that might be the role Perry has for Tuesday's contest at least. Perry has left something to be desired this season with seven goals and 23 points in 37 contests and if you want to be optimistic, you could hope that this demotion will light a fire under him. Meanwhile, Ondrej Kase is skating on the top unit. These moves are in response to the Ducks' rough 6-2 loss to San Jose on Sunday. Today, 6:30 am
  • Scott Wilson finds back of the net
Scott Wilson posted his second goal of the season in Monday's 2-1 victory at Calgary.

Advice: Wilson also finished with a plus-1 rating and a pair of hits in addition to the unassisted marker. He has spent time with the Penguins and Red Wings this season, but he might finally have found a home in Western New York. The center gives the team a little grit, something the can definitely use. However, he doesn't warrant much in the way of fantasy consideration. Yesterday, 10:00 pm
  • Chad Johnson picks up OT victory in Calgary
Chad Johnson allowed just one goal on 33 shots in Monday's 2-1 overtime win at Calgary.

Advice: Johnson entered the game with a 1-8-3 record, 3.85 goals-against average and .878 save percentage, so this was a huge surprise considering the Flames were 7-1-2 across their past 10 outings. Despite the victory he isn't a recommended fantasy play should the team turn to him again on Tuesday in Edmonton. He'll need to string together a few victories in a row before fantasy owners in deeper pools can trust him again. Yesterday, 9:21 pm
  • Brendan Perlini scores in third straight game
Brendan Perlini picked up an even-strength goal in Monday's 3-2 victory against the Islanders.

Advice: Perlini flicked the switch on the goal lamp for the third consecutive outing, and he has five goals across his past 10 contests. He has picked up the pace with 2.4 shots per game in eight January outings after managing just 1.8 SOG in 12 December contests. His confidence on the offensive end is growing, but his fantasy value remains strictly limited to deeper pools. Yesterday, 9:08 pm
  • Antti Raanta pushes aside Isles for OT win
Antti Raanta allowed just two goals on 34 shots in Monday's 3-2 overtime victory against the visiting Islanders.

Advice: Raanta improved to 8-12-5 overall on the season, with three of those victories coming in seven January outings. He has lost just once in regulation since flipping the calendar from 2017, losing three times in a shootout. Raanta has allowed three or fewer goals in each of his six January outings, and 14 of his past 16 appearances overall. Despite playing for the cellar-dwelling Coyotes he has emerged as a decent low-end No. 2 fantasy backstop. Yesterday, 9:00 pm
