Player Notes

  • Lights lamp twice Saturday
Laine scored two goals in Saturday's 4-3 preseason loss to the Sabres.

Advice: Centering a line between Kirill Marchenko and Emil Bemstrom, Laine found the back of the net in the first and second periods. The Blue Jackets are taking a long look at the possibility of using Laine at center during the regular season, and performances like this would seem to make that more likely to happen. The 25-year-old hasn't played more than 56 games in a season since 2018-19 due to injuries, but in the last two years for Columbus, he's maintained an 82-game scoring pace of 35 goals and 80 points. • Scores short-hander
Guhle scored a short-handed goal, blocked four shots and delivered one hit in Saturday's 3-1 preseason loss to the Maple Leafs.

Advice: The Canadiens took advantage of an offensive-zone faceoff on the penalty kill, when Guhle snuck in from the point on the off-side and beat Martin Jones stick-side with a wrister. He's appeared in three of four preseason games and is preparing to be part of the top pair when the regular season opens. The 2020 first-round pick paired with 2023 first-round pick, David Reinbacher, on Saturday in what was a glimpse of future seasons. Following the game, Reinbacher was loaned to HC Kloten of Switzerland's National League. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:40 pm
  • Out clause in contract
Voronkov has a clause in his contract that would allow him to return to the KHL if he's not on an NHL roster by the end of December, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports.

Advice: The 23-year-old center measured at a massive 6-foor-5, 240 pounds in training camp with the Blue Jackets and could give them a physical presence in a bottom-six role, but the team's depth at forward could also cause Voronkov to begin the season with AHL Cleveland. GM Jarmo Kekalainen believes he'll make the Opening Night roster, however. "I'll say this... when he's in front of the net trying to screen the goalie, I kinda like his size right now," Kekalainen said this weekend. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:37 pm
  • Start of season in doubt
Tarasov (knee) may not be ready for the start of the regular season, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports.

Advice: The Blue Jackets were hoping Tarasov would be healthy enough to back up Elvis Merzlikins when games begin to count Oct. 12, but his uncertain status prompted the team to claim Spencer Martin off waivers from the Canucks. "We don't have a timeframe on Tarasov's injury right now; it's a work in progress," GM Jarmo Kekalainen said after making the claim. "We just wanted to make sure that we don't have to go into the season with not enough quality goaltenders who have experience and ability to play in the NHL." If Tarasov's absence does extend into the regular season, he could end up getting a rehab assignment at AHL Cleveland before rejoining the NHL roster. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 11:26 pm
  • Snags win in preseason debut
Husso set aside 15 of 16 shots en route to a 5-2 preseason win over the Capitals on Saturday.

Advice: Husso looked sharp in his preseason debut, with the only damage against him coming in the form of a Dylan Strome power-play tally. Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said last week that Husso will manage a workload similar to what he endured last season, meaning the Finnish netminder figures to log between 55-58 starts. When he needs a breather during the regular season, James Reimer -- whom the Wings signed in free agency -- would be next in line to get the call as the No. 2 backstop. • Avoids serious injury
Fabbri's upper-body injury from Saturday's 5-2 preseason win over the Capitals is not expected to keep him out long, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

Advice: Fabbri has been a model for perseverance, opting to continue his career despite having to work past three ACL surgeries. "We're probably being a little cautious there," head coach Derek Lalonde said. "If he doesn't practice (Sunday), I think we'll expect him sometime early in the week to practice. I don't think it's anything long term." Last year, Fabbri managed a career-high shooting percentage (20) to go along with 16 points through 28 games before getting shut down in March. • Loaned to Switzerland
Reinbacher was loaned to HC Kloten of Switzerland's National League on Saturday.

Advice: Reinbacher logged 16:27 of ice time while tallying one hit and one shot on goal in Saturday's preseason loss to Toronto. As expected, the 18-year-old blueliner will continue his development in Switzerland for the time being. He was selected fifth overall in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 1:11 pm
  • Injured Saturday
Savoie (lower body) was stretchered off the ice during Saturday's preseason tilt against the Wild, Charlie Roumeliotis of NBC Sports Chicago reports.

Advice: Savoie was alert and gave a thumbs-up as he was taken off the ice, which is generally a positive sign. The team will likely have an update on his status in the coming days. The 19-year-old is expected to spend the 2023-24 campaign in the QMJHL. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:50 am
  • Cut loose from PTO
Montreal released Bisson from his professional tryout agreement Saturday and sent him to AHL Laval for training camp.

Advice: Bisson, who signed a one-year, AHL deal with the Rocket in July, had four goals and 16 points in 61 minor-league contests with Ontario last season. The 26-year-old defender doesn't have any NHL experience yet. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:18 am
