  • Blake Wheeler named captain of the Jets
The Winnipeg Jets have named Blake Wheeler as their new captain.

Advice: The last captain, Andrew Ladd, was traded to Chicago before the trade deadline and signed with the New York Islanders this off-season. Wheeler has been with the organization for the last seven years. The 30-year-old finished sixth in league scoring last year with 78 points. Dustin Byfuglien and Mark Scheifele will serve as the alternate captains. "For me, this is obviously a huge honor," said Wheeler. "I really look forward to being a leader on this team...it's not just going to be us three, we have a great group of men in our room. Rotoworld.com Today, 10:33 am
  • Ryan Callahan (hip) disappointed to miss WC
Ryan Callahan (hip) is disappointed that he won't be able to play in the World Cup of Hockey.

Advice: Callahan was originally named to Team USA's roster, but he pulled out of the tournament in late June after undergoing hip surgery. "It's really tough," Callahan said. "It's definitely disappointing that I'm going to miss that. Anytime you get to represent your country, it's something special. And to be in the World Cup is something I've never experienced before." Callahan is also expected to miss the first month of the regular season, but added that he's on schedule with the recovery. Expect him to return in mid-November. Rotoworld.com Today, 6:31 am

Zach Parise (back) has officially been cleared by the Wild's doctors.

Before heading to Wild training camp, Parise will represent Team USA at the upcoming World Cup. The 32-year-old scored 25 goals and 53 points in 70 games last season. • Chris Higgins signs PTO with Flames
Chris Higgins has signed a PTO with the Calgary Flames.

Advice: The 33-year-old dealt with injuries and a demotion to the minors while with the Canucks last season. Higgins scored three goals and an assist in 33 NHL games and nine goals and 13 points in 22 AHL games. Even if he does crack Calgary's roster after training camp, he won't have any fantasy value. • Mark Giordano anxious about Gaudreau contract
Mark Giordano admitted he's a little anxious about Johnny Gaudreau's contract situation.

Advice: Giordano is referring to the fact that the Flames still haven't signed Gaudreau to a contract extension. "At the end of the day there’s always a little bit of anxiety," said Giordano. "We know what he is and what he means to our team and what kind of guy he is, and being optimistic as a teammate you hope it will work out. I know, as a friend of Johnny’s, I’m confident he’ll be done. There’s still time. I talk to him all the time through texts. He’s in a good mindset back home. Obviously as camp gets closer and closer the ball will get rolling even more." Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 7:11 am
