  • Steve Stamkos nets pair in loss to Habs
Steve Stamkos netted a pair of goals for the Lightning on Wednesday, but they ended up on the wrong end of a 5-4 overtime decision in Game 1 of their first round playoff series.

Advice: Stamkos is picking up right where he left off towards the end of the regular season by scoring in bunches, but his efforts weren't enough to lift his team to victory on this night. Alex Killorn and Nikita Kucherov also registered markers for Tampa Bay in the losing effort.

  • Anders Lindback succumbs to Canadiens
Anders Lindback did his best to prevent it, but the Lightning dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to Montreal in Game 1 of their first round playoff series Wednesday.

Advice: Lindback stopped 39 of 44 shots in the defeat and did a good job of keeping the Lightning in the game for as long as he did. With starter Ben Bishop sidelined until further notice, Lindback is likely to start again in Game 2 Friday.
  • Tomas Hertl practices on Sharks' third line
Tomas Hertl skated on the Sharks' third line during Wednesday's practice.

Advice: Take that with a grain of salt because San Jose keeps altering its lines. Hertl was playing on the top line before he suffered a major knee injury and he might end up back in that role at various points during the playoffs.
  • Dallas will get back Ray Whitney for Game 1
Ray Whitney (lower body) will play in Dallas' postseason opener on Wednesday.

Advice: Whitney missed the Stars' last six regular season contests. Look for him to play alongside Shawn Horcoff and Alex Chiasson on the team's fourth line.

  • Jan Hejda practices with Avalanche Wednesday
Jan Hejda (upper body) took part in Wednesday's practice.

Advice: Hejda is day-to-day and questionable for Game 1 on Thursday. Hejda had six goals and 17 points in 78 games in 2013-14. He was also second on the team with an average of 22:19 minutes per contest.

  • Tomas Vokoun starts playoffs as third goalie
Tomas Vokoun is serving as the Pittsburgh Penguins' third-string goaltender.

Advice: Vokoun completed a conditioning stint after missing the season due to a blood clot. If Marc-Andre Fleury struggles in the playoffs, Vokoun might find himself back between the pipes.

  • Smith brothers set for playoff meeting
Brendan and Reilly Smith will be on opposing sides in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Advice: Brendan plays on Detroit's top defense pairing and Reilly skates on Boston's second line, so the two of them are sure to cross paths in the series. They have faced each other before during the regular season, but there's a lot more on the line now.
  • R.J. Umberger might be available for Game 2
R.J. Umberger (upper body) is a possibility for Game 2 on Saturday.

  • Patrick Kane took part in full practice Tues.
Patrick Kane skated on the third line with Bryan Bickell and Andrew Shaw on Tuesday.

Advice: It was his first full practice with his teammates after missing the last 12 games of the regular season with a knee injury. "It was nice to do some drills that are game-like, whether it was three-on-twos up the ice or power play or defensive zone coverage, things like that to get back into it," said Kane.
  • Anders Lindback is eager to step up
Anders Lindback played well down the stretch for the Lightning after making some adjustments to his game.

Advice: "Just way more patient," Lindback said. "I feel like I'm more consistent in everything I do out there. You just keep pushing. It's time to take it to another level." He has worked on not making the first move when shooters challenge him, which has given him a quieter and more steady style. He'll start Game 1 of Tampa Bay's first-round series against Montreal because Ben Bishop isn't ready to return yet from an elbow injury. "When you get an opportunity, you have to take advantage of it," Lindback said.
  • Team USA names Jake Gardiner to WHC roster
Jake Gardiner will play for Team USA at the World Hockey Championships next month in Minsk, Belarus.

  • Steve Stamkos ready for leadership challenge
Steve Stamkos is back in the playoffs after he picked up 13 points in 18 games in 2011, but this time he's the captain of a young, upstart squad.

Advice: "You're the leader of a team that's going to the Stanley Cup playoffs. It's a challenge, but it's fun, it's exciting," he said. "For me, everything that's happened this year, to get a chance to come back and play, is an unbelievable feeling. But to get a chance to be in the playoffs, and hopefully lead this team, that's a challenge. For me, you take that challenge personally, but you realize we have a great bunch of guys here." Stamkos missed 45 games this season with a broken tibia, but he still tallied 25 goals and 40 points in 37 appearances.

  • Would the Senators move Jason Spezza?
Jason Spezza's future with the Ottawa Senators is uncertain.

Advice: "We'll see where we go with him," GM Bryan Murray said in Tuesday's post-mortem media address. His words will add more fuel to the fire that Ottawa may ask Spezza to waive his no-trade clause if they can find a deal for him.
  • Jacob Trouba will play for U.S. at WHC
Jacob Trouba will play for Team USA at the IIHF World Hockey Championships next month.

  • Anders Lindback likely starter for Lightning
With Ben Bishop doubtful to return from what Tampa Bay officials are calling an upper body injury, Anders Lindback likely will get the call in net Wednesday night for the first game of the Lightning's opening playoff series against the Montreal Canadiens.

Advice: Lindback earned the first star of the week in the NHL for the period ending April 13. He was thrust into action after Bishop's injury. He posted a 3-0-0 record with a 0.67 GAA and .975 save percentage. Whatever doubts might have lingered when the Bolts were forced to turn to Lindback were washed away in the goalie's three appearances down the stretch. "He's playing with a lot of confidence,'' defenseman Matt Carle said. "So, it's no surprise to see how well he's doing. And it's just great for our team and we have a lot of confidence playing in front of him.'' That's a far cry from where Lindback was for most of the season. As Bishop posted franchise records with 37 wins, a 2.24 goals-against average and .924 save percentage, Lindback was relegated to backup duties, rarely seeing playing time.

  • Patrick Kane eager to return for Game 1
Patrick Kane (lower body) skated Monday as he prepares to return to the lineup in Chicago's playoff opener on Thursday night.

Advice: "I feel pretty good," Kane said. "I've had some time to rest my injury, obviously, the right amount of time, and with anything you want to make sure you're feeling good coming back. I think that's where I'm at right now. It'll be nice to get a couple skates with the team (Tuesday) and Wednesday and the pregame skate Thursday and get ready to go." He hasn't played since Mar. 19 because of a lower-body injury.
    Monday, 1:57 pm
  • Jonathan Toews feels good, excited to return
Jonathan Toews (upper body) participated in Monday's optional practice and said he felt "really good."

Advice: "(Tuesday) I'll be out there with the boys, back to the usual routine," Toews added. "It's kind of nice. It's not fun to be on your own program for a couple of weeks. I'm looking forward to being back." He hasn't played since Mar. 30, but he's slated to return to the lineup for Game 1 against St. Louis on Thursday.
    Monday, 1:54 pm
  • Anders Lindback receives 1st star of the week
Anders Lindback earned the first star of the week for the period ending April 13.

Advice: He was thrust into action due to an injury to Ben Bishop and elevated his play in Tampa Bay's last three matches of the regular season. Lindback posted a 3-0-0 record with a 0.67 goals-against average, .975 save percentage and one shutout to earn the weekly honor. He'll start the playoffs for the Lightning if Bishop isn't ready to go by then.
    Monday, 11:31 am
  • Jan Hejda sustains UBI Sunday night
Jan Hejda suffered an upper-body injury in Sunday's regular season finale.

Advice: He was hurt in the second period and didn't return after logging 14:47 of ice time. Coach Patrick Roy wasn't sure about the defenseman's status following the contest, so his availability for Game 1 of the playoffs against Minnesota should be considered questionable at this time.
    Monday, 9:36 am
  • Penguins recall Tomas Vokoun from minors
The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled goaltender Tomas Vokoun from the minors.

Advice: Vokoun was sent to the minors over the weekend and he was 1-1 with the Baby Pens. Look for Vokoun to be the third string goalie behind Marc-Andre Fleury and Jeff Zatkoff in the playoffs. He missed the entire season after he was diagnosed with blood clots in his pelvis during the off-season.

  • Steve Stamkos goes two pointless games
Steve Stamkos might not carry much momentum into the playoffs, as he failed to score a point in his last two games of the 2013-14 regular season.

Advice: It wasn't for a lack of effort, however, particularly on Sunday. He fired five SOG against the Capitals but was unable to beat Braden Holtby in an odd 1-0 (SO) win for the Bolts.
    Sunday, 4:20 pm
  • Anders Lindback gets another shutout for TBL
If a small sample size of games is any indication, Anders Lindback might just be heating up at exactly the right time for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Advice: With Ben Bishop's injury situation murky, the Lightning might need Lindback to start for some time. With Sunday's shutout, he generated two goose eggs in his last three appearances (all wins). That's a significant departure from his mostly lousy 2013-14 season. He's suddenly a wild card in playoff pools, especially if Bishop's injury news is bad.
    Sunday, 4:09 pm
  • Tampa Bay can secure home ice advantage
The Tampa Bay Lightning can secure home ice advantage for the first round by beating Washington on Sunday.

Advice: "It's in our power," Steve Stamkos said. "The fans deserve it. Our city deserves it, and we certainly deserve it with how hard we've played and the amount of adversity we've overcome as a team." Either way, Tampa Bay will face the Montreal Canadiens in its opening series.
    Sunday, 8:14 am
  • Coach: Toews 'absolutely' ready for playoffs
Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said that Jonathan Toews will "absolutely" participate in the playoff opener.

Advice: Toews missed Chicago's final six regular season games. He had 28 goals and 68 points in 76 contests in 2013-14.
    Sunday, 7:08 am
  • Patrick Kane is good to play in Game 1
Patrick Kane (lower body) will definitely be available for Game 1 of the first round, according to Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville.

Advice: Kane hasn't played since March 19th due to the injury. He finished the regular season with 29 goals and 69 points in 69 games this season.
    Sunday, 7:07 am
  • Tomas Hertl plays with Thornton and Burns
Tomas Hertl returned to his original line on Saturday.

Advice: Hertl played alongside Joe Thornton and Brent Burns and look for the trio to play together once the first round of the playoffs get underway starting on Wednesday. He is worth selecting fairly high in playoff pools if you think that the Sharks are going far into the playoffs.
    Sunday, 6:34 am
  • R.J. Umberger out indefinitely with UBI
R.J. Umberger is now out indefinitely with an upper body injury.

Advice: Umberger was projected to miss at least a couple of weeks when the injury occurred a week ago but his status has now changed as the playoffs are set to begin. He had been a healthy scratch of late and will end the season with 34 points, including eight power play goals.
    Sunday, 3:48 am
  • Jason Spezza scores only goal in Sens' win
Jason Spezza scored a power-play goal at 7:35 of the second period to give the Ottawa Senators a 1-0 victory over the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night.

Advice: It was the final game of the regular season for the Leafs, who didn't qualify for the playoffs. The Sens play their final game Sunday (in Pittsburgh) but they also won't be in the playoffs. Spezza's goal was his 23rd of the season. Assists went to Erik Karlsson, his 53rd of the season, and Ales Hemsky, his 30th.
    Saturday, 6:51 pm
  • Trouba leaves Friday's game with face injury
Jacob Trouba left Friday night's game in the first period after taking a Paul Byron shot to the face.

Advice: There is no word as to the extent of the injury but the good news is that Trouba will have all off-season to heal up as the Jets are the first team in the NHL to complete its schedule.
    Saturday, 10:56 am
  • Ray Whitney (lower body) is out Friday
Ray Whitney (lower body) won't be available for Friday's game.

Advice: It sounds like Whitney is close to returning though. He might play on Sunday if the Stars need to win that game to make the playoffs. If not, he will probably continue to rest until the postseason.
    Friday, 10:46 am
    L, 2-1 @ Pho
  • Tomas Hertl (knee) is ready to return Friday
Tomas Hertl (knee) will return to the San Jose Sharks' lineup on Friday.

Advice: Hertl emerged as one of the most exciting rookies in the league with his four-goal game on Oct. 8. He had 15 goals and 25 points in 35 games before he suffered a knee injury and needed surgery to repair his PCL and MCL. This will be his first game since Dec. 19. It will be interesting to see if the Sharks reunite their former top line of Hertl, Joe Thornton, and Brent Burns.
    Friday, 10:26 am
  • Tomas Vokoun will start in AHL Friday night
Tomas Vokoun (blood clot) will play between the pipes in the AHL on Friday.

Advice: Vokoun is on a conditioning stint as he attempts to return after dealing with blood clots in his pelvis. If he's healthy, he might serve as an insurance policy for Pittsburgh in the playoffs.

  • Jake Gardiner sets new high for points
Jake Gardiner assisted on both of Toronto's goals in a 4-2 loss to Florida Thursday.

Advice: He established a new personal best with 31 points as a result of the two-point effort. Gardiner has finished the season on a positive note. He has produced five goals and nine assists in his past 17 outings.
